Caught in the horns of dilemma?
If the choice is between public safety and public freedom, I do not hesitate to say here that public safety will always win,’ Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi said in a lecture.
As reported in the Straits Times today. Obviously in response to the ‘walks’ in KL showcasing dissatisfaction and anger towards the government. Earlier last month, BERSIH marched for electoral reforms, HINDRAF for Indian marginalization and most recently, the lawyers in conjunction with World Human Rights day.
The authorities response has been swift and sure. The message is simply, “Don’t take to the streets!” As simple as that. Basically no more street protests.
And the excuse-as old as Malaysian history since the turbulent 60s- is that street protests endangers the public. This is Abdullah’s reasoning.
My question dear PM sir, is whether freedom and security is like water and oil? Basically, after peeling away the hypocritical benevolence coating your supposed commitment to our ’safety’, what’s left is simply an excuse to silence legitimate criticism. Isn’t this simply the words of a despot giving excuses for his tyranny?
That’s right sir, I think you are simply too busy justifying your action against the organizers to really listen to what the marchers have to say to you.
