KUALA LUMPUR: Bahasa Malaysia will again be the official term to be used to refer to the national language.

In a unanimous decision last April, the Cabinet felt that reverting to the term Bahasa Malaysia would help inculcate a sense of belonging for all citizens irrespective of race, said Information Minister Datuk Seri Zainuddin Maidin.
Seriously, whatever man!
The reason is to quote: “The Malay language belongs to Malaysians of all races and not just the Malays. The term Bahasa Malaysia would instil a sense of belonging”
I have no objections. But for nostalgia sake, I was seriously confused while I was still in secondary school. Was it Bahasa Melayu or Bahasa Malaysia? Always got confused.
Don’t get me wrong, I love the Malay language…ooops should be the Malaysian language
although I use English close to 100% of the time nowadays. It is a very lyrical language and its grammar simple to master.
But, however noble the intention of promoting national unity with this move, consider that Americans are not united because English is called the American language or that the British are united because English is called the British language.
It’s only one step. There are many more to be taken.

Pardon the Malay(sian) vulgarity in the title…

Lihat dari dua sudut. Sudut akademik dan sudut populariti. Merujuk pakar bahasa nama asal bahasa Melayu. Diangkat status kepada bahasa negara (bahasa kebangsaan). Seperti juga bahasa Inggeris. Asalnya bahasa bangsa Inggeris, kemudian menjadi bahasa kebangsaan negara. Masih tetap namanya bahasa Inggeris. Tidak dinamakan bahasa Amerika misalnya. Ataupun bahasa Australia misalnya. Kita ada bahasa Melayu Malaysia, bahasa Melayu Brunai dan bahasa Melayu Singapura. Juga bahasa Melayu Indonesia. Kalau kutip pendapat populariti (agak banyak yang tak reti/buat-buat)mungkin jawapannya, sebaliknya.
