Spiderman 3

Just got back from watching Spiderman 3.

It’s a nice show. 3/5 star material and a nice way to chill out on a Friday.

Well….it’s the kind of show that suffers from too many things happening at the same time. I just don’t get the deal with Sandman. His inclusion was kinda forced. Take him away and the flow of Spidey 3 would be just fine.

Catch it if you have nothing else better to do. Otherwise, just rent the DVD when it comes out

The extreme logic of moral pluralism

This is an excerpt from the longer article you can access by clicking on the paragraph. It is written by Johann Hari of the Independant.

Indeed, in the name of this warm, welcoming multiculturalism, the German courts have explicitly compared Muslim women to the brain-damaged. The highest administrative court in North Rhine-Westphalia has agreed that Muslim parents have the “right” to forbid their daughter from going on a school trip unless she was accompanied by a male family member at all times. The judges said the girl was like “a partially mentally impaired person who, because of her disability, can only travel with a companion”.

As the Iranian author Azar Nafisi puts it: “I very much resent it when people – maybe with good intentions or from a progressive point of view – keep telling me, ‘It’s their culture’ … It’s like saying the culture of Massachusetts is burning witches.” She is horrified by the moves in Canada to introduce shariah courts to enforce family law for Muslims

What this journalist is writing about in Germany is horrific. But what I highlight the boldtext should be familiar to any Malaysian reader.

We are so used to the dual court system in Malaysia that we forget what an abberation it is, even to Muslims living abroad. And we forget how barbaric the true application of Sharia law can actually be.

Well, to those who still believe in relative morality, this is how brutal people will take advantage of this philosophy.

The rising cost of living…

I was talking to Andrew the other time and he mentioned something about the increased cost of living in Malaysia.

He gave me this example,” Nowadays, you can’t get a lunch for less than RM 3. A normal plate of Zhap Fan now costs RM3.50. But in Singapore you still can get a meal for like $2.50. (I might add that in NUS, a decent bowl of Wan Tan Mien is only $1.80). So if you’re earning RM3000 in Malaysia and compare it with someone who is earning $3000. You’re actually spend more on food in Malaysia.”

And then I read that the weekend edition of theStar is being raised to RM1.50. Last time when I was still a kid, theStar only cost 80 cents, then it went up to a ringgit and then to RM 1.20.

I also found out something else. June pointed this out to me: The price of electricity in Singapore is tied to the current price of crude oil around the world. But I don’t think there is such a thing in Malaysia. The tariff is fixed by the government and it is raised accordingly.

Interesting comparisons between the two countries.
