In the news

Still remember this post. Well here’s another story, which is similiar.

You won’t see this kind of reporting on national media of course. Mind you, Al-Jazeera is a Arabic news network, created for the sole purpose of countering the Western spin and slant of international news networks.

Too smart for your own good…

A nice one I got of Lim Kit Siang’s blog. (This proves the man got a sense of humour too..hehe)

An Indian boy on his first day at school in the US

It was the first day of school and a new student named Chandrashekhar Subrahmanyam entered the fourth grade.

The teacher said, “Let’s begin by reviewing some American History.

Who said, “Give me Liberty , or give me Death”?

She saw a sea of blank faces, except for Chandrashekhar, who had his hand up: “Patrick Henry, 1775″ he said.

“Very good!” Who said, “Government of the People, by the People, for the People, shall not perish from the Earth?”

Again, no response except from Chandrashekhar.” Abraham Lincoln, 1863″ said Chandrashekhar.

The teacher snapped at the class, “Class, you should be ashamed.

Chandrashekhar, who is new to our country, knows more about its history than you do!”

She heard a loud whisper: “F**k the Indians,”

“Who said that?” she demanded.

Chandrashekhar put his hand up. “General Custer, 1862.”

At that point, a student in the back said, “I’m gonna puke.”

The teacher glares around and asks “All right! Now, who said that?”

Again, Chandrashekhar says, “George Bush to the Japanese Prime Minister, 1991.”

Now with almost a mob hysteria someone said, “You little shit. If you say anything else, I’ll kill you.”

Chandrashekhar frantically yells at the top of his voice, “Gary Condit to Chandra Levy, 2001.”

The teacher fainted. And as the class gathered around the teacher on the floor, someone said, “Oh shit, we’re fucked!”

And Chandrashekhar said quietly, “George Bush, Iraq , 2005.”

Never do this during a meeting!

This is so funny. Better be warned before you answer a call during a cinema screening, or a meeting for that matter.

On Monday, April 23 2007, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences screened Star Wars as part of their Great to Be Nominated series. Before the start of the show, they showed this special clip as a message of warning to members in the audience.

The association is lost on me…

Depending on how you look at it, the following poster got me thinking.

Achtung! There’s good reason why I didn’t just paste the poster here okay, it contains ‘explicit’ material.

But I wonder about the uninteded message that YouthAids is may have put out. I’m not taking an issue with their representation of different sexual positions. And I do get their point that AIDS spreads through sexual contact (so think before you have a good time.)

But why explicitly associate sex with death? It sort of gives the impression that sex is negative and life threatening. Any one who was a little more intelligent, may have pointed out that that the sequence of graphics is non-sequitur. One might as well say, sex kills. Or more guardedly, unprotected sex kills.

I think we should be clear that it is the HIV virus (or more correctly, various infections caused by nil immune system) that kills. Posters like this perpetuate the stigma associated with HIV-AIDS rather than takes it away. It’s sort of saying that ‘you got AIDS because you-weren’t-smart-enough-to-get-your-partner-to-go-for-a-heath-checkup-before-having-sex’. Subliminal messages are not helpful or liberating. If religion gave AIDS its moral stigma, maybe a more secular society is giving it an elitist and sophisticated stigma?

Am I reading too much into this or not?

Some loot, others find

Focus your attention the red bubble. It really shows that sometimes even international news agencies is not as colour blind as it claims to be.

Unequals…

Got this interesting piece of news on BBC.com from Yeo Huan. (Man haven’t seen that guy in years, wonder how he is doing now?)

Maths enthusiasts are being challenged to answer a sample question from Chinese university entrance tests. The tests are set for prospective science undergraduates. The UK’s Royal Society of Chemistry is offering a £500 prize to one lucky but bright person who answers the question below correctly.

The question is reproduced below.

Any one up to the challenge? You can leave the answer in the comments box. I haven’t actually worked out the solution. But if I do, I’ll post it in a later post.

Done with you for a little while

So finally A/Prof Chua announced, “Times up.”

It’s a mixture of relief, anxiousness and regret. That always happens after a maths test. But since its over, the cliche “No point worrying about it” takes over.

Cliche as it might be, I’ll have to use it to soothe that sore nerves for the time being.

But I’m not done with exams. There’s still my Phd qualifying to go. But for the time being, rest.

Really meh…

What a nice way to get people interested in science. Put a ’science-fictional’ spin on it…

Kryptonite is no longer just the stuff of fiction feared by caped superheroes. A new mineral matching its unique chemistry – as described in the film Superman Returns – has been identified in a mine in Serbia.

I guess the next is that Superman was found by an elderly couple in the middle of Kansas?

The passing…

Just got this hot off CNN.com.

MOSCOW, Russia (AP) – Former President Boris Yeltsin, who engineered the final collapse of the Soviet Union and pushed Russia to embrace democracy and a market economy, has died, a Kremlin official said Monday. He was 76.

One more personality from the past century in passing. Now isn’t it exciting to live at the turn of the times.
